St. Cathrin Marathon
A group of German runners annually comes to the St. Cathrin
monastery and participates on the international St. Cathrin peace marathon. However there are 5 and 10 km distance runs, as well as a half-distance marathon beside the marathon as well as distances of 5 km walking.
Also the enthusiastic scuba diver Jürgen Kuhlmey participated. Mike, owner of
Scuba College Nuweiba informed about diving specials in Nuweiba, which consists of an amazing landscape with impressive corral reefs and a huge fish variety. Beside
large Morray Eels and occasionally octopusses the
lightyellow Frogfish as a special kind of nature impressed particularly. Jürgen also dived in Dahab, Sharm el Sheik, Hurgada and
Safagar, however Nuweiba is very special by its astonishing different
structure and lots of frog fish, catching its food by a driven
out fishing rod.
One day pror the start of the marathon it went to St. Cathrin Monastery, lain in 1.500 m. During the briefing the running distance and the
special difficulties on altitude was referred. on 31.12.2008, 9 o'clock In the morning the marathon with many Egyptian and foreign runners, the USA, Canada,
Sweden, Italy and Germany startet, accompanied by Egyptian artists giving a multicolored touch to the start. Winner became Mark of Gebhard
with an excellent time at a value of 2:53: 20. First woman became
Christine Feger with a time of 3:58: 35. The last runner finally arrived after 7 hours, an excellent achievement
for 42,2 km at a value of 1.500 M. A highlight of the meeting was the
invitation of Pater Constantin to a personal guidance to the
world-historical treasures of the monastery. Altogether a well
organized and successful meeting, which is to be repeated in the coming
year.
