A group of German runners annually comes to the St. Cathrin monastery and participates on the international St. Cathrin peace marathon. However there are 5 and 10 km distance runs, as well as a half-distance marathon beside the marathon as well as distances of 5 km walking.

Bus accident injures 15 tourists Print E-mail

A tourist bus on the way from the monastery St. Katherine to Nuweiba had a road accident on 02. April 2008, the bus overturned due a bursted tire. The driver was killed, several tourist as well as 2 Egyptians were injured and transported to the hospital in Sharm El Sheikh.

On the Egyptian peninsula Sinai several torist and Egyptian citizens were injured due to a bus accident while going from the monastery St. Katherine to Nuweiba. The Egyptian bus driver died according  the police statement. Until now there is no accurate number of how many Germans, French or Belgiums were injured but according the police statement there were 9 Germans, 4 Belgium and 1 French women injured. All survived victims were not in a life-threatening condition and were transported to the Internation Hospital in the resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

The police stated, a bursted tire while driving through a curve was the cause for the accident. The road is situated between the mountains and is very curvy. Egyptian bus drivers are well known for their risky way of driving, even courses for the bus drivers organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism were unable to stop this.
