A passport which is valid for at least 6 months is a must when travelling to Egypt. If you only have an ID-Card with you, you must have a passport photo of yourself. There are two types of visa, the most usefull of them is the "large" one month visa, with which you can travel through the entire of Egypt. It can be gained either in the Egyptian embassy or in the Sharm El Sheikh airport.
This visa costs 15 US$ and is glued into your passport like a stamp. The second type of visa is the "small" version, this allows you 14 days of stay within the area between Sharm El Sheikh and Taba, this visa is completely free of charge.
WARNING: In certain circumstances you may think it is a good idea to save yourself 15$ for the visa, but be careful! Without a visa you can only travel along the Aqaba coast line. You will not be able to travel to the national park Ras Mohammed, visit the Thistlegorm and other attractions will also fall out. Even if you unluckily loose your passport, it might be quite difficult to reach your Embassy in Cairo, or reaching El Tur on the suez coast of the Sinai. (El Tur is where you can attain a new visa).
