Environmental protection in Nuweiba PDF Print E-mail

The Sinai is made up of 2 breathtaking environments. On land we can find a vast mountain range, covered with sand and stone blocks. We have also got the Red Sea, not just an environment, but a world of its own. Flourishing corals, varying species of undescribable beauty. Unfortunately, it is only recently that the meaning of the area has been respected, and it has been given protection. Fishing however, even though illegal for everybody except the Bedouin, is still very common and an import way of life for most of Nuweibas' Bedouin.

The earlier opinion towards Environmental protection was "who cares" which resulted in a huge amount of rubbish wherever you put your eye on. Bedouins, tourists and the ferries are to blame for this mess. The Egyptian government thankfully realised this and today, everthing is starting to look better.

We, as people who visit, live on, and love the Sinai, should do our utmost to help keep this place as special as it is.

  • All rubbish we produce on Safaris should be brought back to the Hotel and thrown away appropriately.
  • We should complain about "bad behaviour" to the Hotel management.
  • When other tourists do not respect the environment, please have the courage to speak to them and advise them differently.
  • It is not a crime to pick up litter that you did not throw away.
  • If you need firewood, please purchase this and bring it with you to the campsite, there is no need to use the little vegetation that is left for this purpose.
  • If Bedouins do not respect the environment, you should act as a role model!

Especially coral reefs are unique, amazing places built up over thousands of years by micro-organisms. Unfortunately coral reefs cannot survive when pollution rises, when they are over-fished, and when coral is collected. Diving can also be a factor when not undertaken properly. But here we can also help to minimise the damage. The following rules have been placed on the Red Sea, and should be standard practise for every diver and snorkeller:

  • Do not remove anything from the sea, alive or dead (Coral, Shells, Fish, Plants, Fossils etc.)
  • Spend as little time on the reef as possible, best would be not at all, second best would be to watch where you put your feet/hands.
  • Only use the marked entry and exit points.
  • Feeding the fish is illegal and ruines the natural ecosytem on a reef, dont do it.
  • Fishing of any kind (rod, net, spear etc...) is illegal!

TAKE NOTHING WITH YOU, LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND
