The White Canyon - for those seeking a small adventure Print E-mail

After my visits to the Coloured and the Bridge Canyon I was infected by a "canyon fever", so I decided to visit the White Canyon as well. The trip was booked with the Diving Camp Nuweiba , which ensures you to travel in a small group and with a personal guide.

We were four people and left the Nuweiba Village Hotel at 8 o`clock in the morning in a beautiful red Wrangler Jeep with the bedouin Hassan and one of his sons.

We first took the road leading to Dahab and then turned onto the road in direction of St. Catherine Monastry. After one hour we drove into the desert, whre we hab an enjoyable twenty-minute-ride through loose sand.

Right at the beginning of our walk we knew how the White Canyon got his name: white sand, looking almost like snow, everywhere. Even the rocks are of the same colour. A short while later we started ascending, climbing (!!, it was not too easy :) ) up two hills to a big plateau with a great view of the surrounding area. After we caught breath again and lot of photos later our guide showed us the further way. With the help of two ropes and, in the end, a small ladder, we had to descend in an angle of about 110°. But once you trust the rope, this is real fun!!

After this adventure-part you have narrow, really canyonlike parts changing into wide ranges to watch the impressive surrounding landscape back to canyons. It is al little bit hilly, but this part is easy to manage and therefore really great. And all the time the sand and most of the rocks are white or a light yellow.

You should wear sunglasses, because the sand reflects the sun nearly like snow. Boots are any other kind of good footwear are highly recommended. And take enough water (3 liters), because a 2-hour walk in the sun gets you easily dehydrated.

At the end of the walk we reached the oasis Ain Hudra, which is interesting to see but not as impressive as I thought an oasis would be. But the sweet Bedouin tea in the end is very nice and helps you getting back your power.

All together it is a really nice canyon too and if you have time to visit more than one, you should not miss this one. If you only have time for one canyon, than I would recommend the Bridge Canyon .
