The national park Abu Ghalum stretches its way along the coastline of the Gulf of Aqaba, between Dahab and Nuweiba. It is a 500 km² natural wonderland. The beaches, covered with shells, run parallel to the coral reefs - as long as not broken by a mountain side vanishing into the deep.
When looking around on the beaches in the national park, you will find masses of Nerita Splendens, a miniscule snail, whose decorative housing mixes amazlingly well with the pebble mosaic ground. In the inside of the park, there are huge mazes of deep wadis and large granite mountains, broken up into layers by dark basalt. There are 167 different plant kinds growing in the national park, 44 of which only grow here. It seems that mammals are very capable of surviving with the food choices, due to the large numbers of Nubean Goats, Red Foxes and Striped Hyenas. There are also many reptiles in the area, including the Black Cobra, Horned Viper and Burton's Carpet Viper.
For trips into the national park you will need to pay a small entry fee. |
