The mount moses, south of St. Catherines Monastery, has a huge religeous significance for Jews, Christians and Muslims. According to the old testament, Moses recieved the ten commandments here.
During the past centuries, the Mount Moses has attracted thousands of pilgrims from throughout the world. On your excursions from Nuweiba to Mt. Moses there are two ways which you can use to reach the summit at 2285m: either by using the approx. 4000 steps built by monks, or the easier but longer route. Both routes lead to a plateau, known as the Elija Platform, from which you can walk up the last 750 steps. At the summit you will find the chapell which was built in 1934, there used to be a chapel here which was built in 363 AC. The ascent takes about 3 hours, and the view from the summit to the Sinai landscape is guaranteed to take your breath away, especially at sunrise. |
