Well hidden between the sandstone cliffs, very close to the road from St. Catherine to Dahab/Nuweiba, lies one of the parts of the Sinai that is most worth a visit on your Sinai excursion. The Arabic name Ein Khudra means Green Oasis and describes best what makes this place so special; the fresh source water which supplies the date palms in this otherwise so barren landscape.
If one approaches from the south, then you will be greated by a panoramic view onto the small oasis. Dont be shy to walk through the White Canyon in the southeast, as you will be rewarded with dramatic geological formations. Ein Khudra is not only a beatufil site, it is also a place of historical significance: over centuries it has been an important resting site for pilgrims, on their way from Jerusalem to St. Catherine. Antique markings on the walls prove the prescence of Greaks, Romans, Byzantines and Crusaders, who allowed themselves a rest here. |
