A possible competition for the Coloured Canyon?
After visiting Coloured Canyon some weeks ago, we ask ourselves: is
it worth to visit another canyon? Another desert trip with Bedouins? Again sun, heat, rocks and sand? Because we will only find
the answer if we try, we booked the trip with Diving
Camp Nuweiba.
With the jeep we passed the checkpoint on the road to Cairo and the
junction to Coloured Canyon, after about
45 minutes continuing on a desert road – but only for about 15 minutes. This is, in our opinion and
for all tender bottoms, a huge advantage compared to the Coloured
Canyon., where you will be shaken for about an hour...
With our very friendly, young but experienced Bedouin tour guide we started the walk; first slig htly uphill, then downhill. This first part of the walk can easily be done, but after a while we head into another small valley. Starting here it is a bit more exhausting, good shoes are recommended and your last walk should not be too long ago. Important is to take enough water, because you will not find any supermarket in the desert
In most parts Bridge Canyon is wider than Coloured Canyon and the walls are more shallow – instead you often have an amazing paranoma of the surrounding landscape, which is even more impressive. The area is rough, the rocks not so honed and the bridge, which gives this canyon its name, nearly makes you shudder: about 50 metres above your path a cliff about 20 metres long and 1,5 metres wide lunges out of the wall, fixed only at its ends.
A lot of colours you will find here too: red rocks, red sand, but also white, yellow, brown. Some pieces look like they are drawn by humans, but everything is natural.
Some climbing parts in Bridge Canyon need to be mastered, but everybody with normal fitness will be able to manage. No part is as narrow as some parts in Coloured Canyon, nobody needs to be afraid of getting stucked. The last plain part of the route is quite comfortable, you can enjoy soft sand under your feet, sun from above, multi-coloured rocks and stones and the panorama of the impressive landscape of the Sinai - a unique and fascinating surrounding.
We absolutely enjoyed the silence in this area with only beeing 4 visitors in our group and no other people in the canyon. We could take all the time we needed to take pictures and enjoy everything without the crowds typically found on other touristic sights to see.
After a walk of about 2 hourse we could relax: black Bedouin tea with lots of su gar, prepared by local Bedouins in a small oasis; wonderful silence, shadow under palm trees – is there anything else you might ask for? Probably youdesire to stay, enjoy, sleep and return home the next morning. After we finished the tea the trip heads back to Nuweiba following a desert road, using a jeep waiting for us in this oasis.
Conclusion: definitely worthwhile, different to the Coloured Canyon, but, to our personal opinion even more impressive and, above all, much more quiet.
